Two Killed by Falling Trees as 96mph Winds Batter Wales and West England

Storms bring chaos across the UK, leaving thousands without power, disrupting flights, and prompting warnings for wind and rain.

Two people have died as powerful winds reaching 96mph swept across Wales and the west of England, causing widespread disruption and power outages.

In Longton, near Preston, a man in his 40s was killed when a tree fell onto the Citroën van he was driving on the A59 around 9am on Saturday. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Lancashire Police.

A second fatality occurred in Erdington, Birmingham, when a tree struck a car just after 3pm.

The severe weather uprooted trees, damaged seaside piers, and grounded flights, with gusts of up to 96mph recorded in Capel Curig, North Wales, overnight. Hundreds of flights were cancelled or diverted, with some planes forced to abort landings at Heathrow and reroute to Germany.

Yellow weather warnings for wind and rain remain in effect for much of England and Wales on Sunday.
