The Chartered Institute of Journalists has told the Government it has serious reservations with state-backed algorithmic prominence for Public Service Media on social media platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In its response to the Green Paper \u201cWatch This Space: A New Strategic Direction for UK Media,\u201d the Institute highlighted the need for freedom of expression, democratic accountability and the constitutional future of British journalism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CIoJ President Gerald Bowey said: \u201cWhat the government regards as \u2018trustworthy journalism\u2019 should remain an aspiration rather than a statutory category. Trust cannot safely be created by legislative designation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added: \u201cWe strongly advise the Government preserves the conditions in which trust may be freely earned through independent journalism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the Institute agrees with proposals and intentions to support Public Service Media, it warns that it is equally good to strengthen media plurality, so it should also protect independent journalism alongside Public Service Media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Any moves to give state-backed algorithmic priority to Public Service Media on social media platforms would be unconstitutional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Institute reminded the Government of John Milton\u2019s quotation from 1644 in Areopagitica: “And though all the winds of doctrine were let loose to play upon the earth, so Truth be in the field, we do injuriously by licensing and prohibiting to misdoubt her strength.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The pamphlet Areopagitica was written as a speech addressed to the Westminster Parliament as a passionate defence of the liberty of unlicensed printing and freedom of speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The CIoJ insists: \u201cthis principle remains as relevant to the algorithmic distribution of information in the twenty-first century as it was to the licensing of printing presses in the seventeenth.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
