Hundreds of protesters gathered in Portsmouth after around 140 migrants arrived by small boat on Sunday, leading to a tense confrontation with police and damage to vehicles belonging to the police, Coastguard and Border Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident marked an unusual development in the ongoing Channel migration crisis, with the migrants arriving on the Hampshire coast rather than at the more familiar landing points around Dover and Kent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to ITV News, the vessel was intercepted after making its way towards the Hampshire coast on 6 September. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said lifeboats, a Coastguard helicopter, an aircraft and rescue teams were deployed, while Border Force, Border Security Command, Hampshire Police and South Central Ambulance Service also attended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The migrants were subsequently taken ashore in Portsmouth, where coaches were waiting to transport them to a processing facility in Manston, Kent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The arrival quickly became the focus of an anti-migrant demonstration. Sky News reported that hundreds of people gathered near the landing site, blocking roads and attempting to prevent the coaches from leaving. Protesters were heard chanting slogans including \u201cstop the boats\u201d and \u201csend them back\u201d, while some threw objects towards police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police established a cordon around the area as the demonstration continued into the night. A dispersal order was put in place, with officers warning protesters that anyone refusing to comply could be arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary later said the protest had resulted in injuries to a small number of officers, although none were seriously hurt. The force also confirmed that police, Coastguard and Border Force vehicles had been damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Sky News, about 200 demonstrators were eventually dispersed at around 4am on Monday. No arrests had been made at that point, but police launched an investigation into assaults, criminal damage and other offences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The violence prompted condemnation from the government. Ministers said the right to peaceful protest was protected but argued that the behaviour seen in Portsmouth had crossed the line into intimidation and disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chief Secretary to the Treasury Emma Reynolds described the behaviour as \u201cthuggish\u201d in comments reported by Sky News, while thanking police and other emergency services for bringing the situation under control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Guardian also reported that hundreds of masked protesters attempted to prevent the migrants from being transported away from the area. The newspaper said police eventually threatened arrests and cleared the roads in the early hours of Monday, while two police car windscreens were reportedly smashed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The events have raised concerns that people-smuggling routes could be changing. The boat is understood to have travelled from the Normandy region of France towards Portsmouth, a considerably longer journey than the traditional crossings towards Dover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones warned that Portsmouth was not equipped to deal with the arrival of large numbers of migrants by sea. In a statement, she said the incident had placed considerable pressure on police resources, with hundreds of officers required to manage the crowds rather than respond to other emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jones also described the arrival as one of the largest small boats to have reached the UK and argued that the government needed to take action to prevent the southern coast becoming an alternative destination for people smugglers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reuters reported that the arrival of the 140 migrants could indicate a potential shift away from the usual Dover route. The agency also reported that the number of small-boat arrivals this year was down substantially compared with the same period in 2025, although ministers remain concerned about smugglers using new routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Portsmouth unrest followed a separate demonstration in Dover on Saturday, where hundreds of masked, black-clad protesters blocked roads leading to the port. The two incidents have prompted questions about police preparedness and whether similar demonstrations could spread to other coastal communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Financial Times reported that the protests in both Dover and Portsmouth had disrupted port operations and raised questions over whether authorities had been adequately prepared for demonstrations that had been promoted in advance online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Local concerns have also focused on the decision to bring the migrants ashore in Portsmouth. According to the Press Association, Portsmouth council leader Steve Pitt said the Home Office had \u201cserious questions to answer\u201d over the choice of location, arguing that the decision had created unnecessary disruption and placed people at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Home Office has defended the emergency response, while police continue to investigate the disorder. The migrants were safely removed from the area and taken for processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The episode has therefore become more than a local protest.
