Liverpool Sign Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen in £29.5m Deal

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Dutch international Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for €35 million (£29.5 million) on a five-year contract, just hours after announcing Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid.

The Premier League champions activated the 24-year-old’s release clause, securing a player widely seen as Alexander-Arnold’s successor under new head coach Arne Slot.

Frimpong Arrives After Historic Season with Leverkusen

Frimpong played a key role in Leverkusen’s Bundesliga title-winning campaign in 2023–24, helping them secure their first-ever league championship. He made 53 appearances across all competitions this season as the German side finished second in 2024–25.

The right-footed defender is known for his attacking flair and versatility, and he now joins a Liverpool squad already featuring fellow Dutchmen Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch.

Bradley Set to Compete with Frimpong at Right-Back

Frimpong’s arrival will increase competition at right-back, where Northern Ireland international Conor Bradley recently signed a new four-year contract.

Despite Bradley’s promising development, Frimpong is expected to be a key figure in Slot’s tactical setup, particularly following Alexander-Arnold’s high-profile departure to Spain.

From Manchester Roots to Anfield Arrival

Raised in Manchester, Frimpong came through the Manchester City youth academy before moving to Celtic in 2019. His performances in Scotland earned him a transfer to Bayer Leverkusen in January 2021, where he developed into one of Europe’s most dynamic full-backs.

Now, he returns to England as a Premier League champion and a player ready to take the next step at one of Europe’s most storied clubs.

Frimpong may not be the last arrival from Leverkusen. Liverpool are in advanced negotiations to sign German star Florian Wirtz, with a bid of around £109 million including add-ons reportedly submitted.

Wirtz, 22, is a top target for the club and discussions are believed to be in the final stages, with growing optimism that a deal can be finalised soon.

If completed, the move would make Wirtz one of the most expensive signings in Liverpool’s history and a statement of intent under the Slot regime.
