Zelenskyy Calls for Creation of ‘Armed Forces of Europe’ Amid Ongoing War with Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged European leaders to establish a unified military force, warning that Europe cannot rely solely on American support amid escalating tensions with Russia. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Zelenskyy emphasized, “The armed forces of Europe must be created,” as Ukraine continues to defend itself nearly three years into Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for the establishment of a unified European military, arguing that his country’s forces alone are “not enough” to counter threats. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Zelenskyy warned that Europe must prepare for the possibility that “America might say no to Europe on issues that threaten it.”

After nearly three years of defending Ukraine against Russia’s full-scale invasion, Zelenskyy emphasized the need for a stronger European defense system, noting that many leaders have previously suggested the creation of a European military. “I really believe that time has come,” he said. “The armed forces of Europe must be created.”

Zelenskyy’s remarks came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump held separate calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy, aiming to initiate peace negotiations. Trump expressed skepticism about Ukraine joining NATO and suggested that reclaiming all occupied Ukrainian territory was unlikely—comments Zelenskyy warned could play into Putin’s strategy.

Zelenskyy stressed the importance of Europe’s involvement in any peace talks, declaring, “Ukraine will never accept deals made behind our backs without our involvement, and the same rule should apply to all of Europe.” He also cautioned European leaders to prepare for potential threats from Moscow, including the risk of open or “false-flag” attacks.

As tensions continue, Zelenskyy underscored the urgency of building a united European military to ensure security and stability across the continent.
